Wedding invitation wording: samples for every kind of Indian wedding
Good wedding wording says who is inviting, who is getting married, and when and where — in that order, in a tone that matches the family. Below are samples for each situation that you can copy and change.
What every wedding invitation needs
- Who is inviting: the parents, the grandparents, both families, or the couple themselves.
- The invitation line: “request the pleasure of your company”, “cordially invite you”, or a warmer “would love you to join us”.
- Both names in full, often with the parents’ names for each (“daughter of… / son of…”).
- Each function with its date, time and venue — mehendi, haldi, sangeet, the wedding and the reception are separate events, so list them separately.
- A map link or a landmark for every venue, and a dress code if there is one.
- How and by when to RSVP.

Hindi and Tamil lines you can add
Many families like one line in their own language at the top, with the rest in English. These are widely used and safe to copy:
| Line | Language | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ॥ शुभ विवाह ॥ | Hindi | Auspicious wedding |
| सादर आमंत्रण | Hindi | A respectful invitation |
| आपकी उपस्थिति प्रार्थनीय है | Hindi | Your presence is requested |
| திருமண அழைப்பிதழ் | Tamil | Wedding invitation |
| தங்கள் வருகையை அன்புடன் எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம் | Tamil | We lovingly await your arrival |
Listing several functions
For a multi-day wedding, keep the main wording short and list each function underneath. Guests skim, so one line per event works best:
Mehendi · Thursday 18 Feb · 4 pm · Poolside lawn Haldi · Friday 19 Feb · 10 am · Courtyard Sangeet · Friday 19 Feb · 7:30 pm · Grand ballroom Wedding · Saturday 20 Feb · 7:30 pm · Palace lawns Reception · Sunday 21 Feb · 8 pm · Grand ballroom

Questions people ask
Whose name comes first on an Indian wedding invitation?
On the card sent by the bride’s family, the bride’s name comes first; on the groom’s family’s card, the groom’s name does. When the couple or both families invite together, either order is fine — many go with the bride first.
How do I mention a late parent or grandparent?
Write “Late” or “Late Shri / Smt.” before the name in the blessings line, for example “With the blessings of Late Shri Ramnath Gupta”. It is respectful and common.
How do I say “no gifts” politely?
Use a line such as “Your presence and blessings are the only gifts we wish for.” Keep it at the end of the invitation, after the RSVP line.
Should the wording be in English or our own language?
Both work. A common approach is a short line in Hindi, Tamil or your language at the top — an invocation or “Shubh Vivah” — with the details in English so every guest can read them.
